Dexter King, CFE,
Announces Retirement from International Association of Venue Managers
Coppell, TX – Dexter King, CFE,
announced his retirement as President and CEO of the International
Association of Venue Managers, to take effect September 4, 2011.
Since joining IAVM in 1976, King has played a key role in the
development and the core competencies for the “Public Assembly Facility
Management: Principles and Practices” textbook as well as the
establishment of the Public Assembly Facility Management School (PAFMS)
at Oglebay, the Arena Management Conference (AMC), the Leadership
Institute and the University Venue Management Conference (UVMC). King
served on the Board of Directors from 1987 through 1995, culminating as
President in 1993-1994.
“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity that I have had during my
time with IAVM. But I believe that there is a time and season for change
and it is nearing the time for a new President and CEO to take the
helm,” said King. “I am very proud of the IAVM staff for their
commitment and dedication to our member needs and I will forever be
thankful for their support and cherish the time I spent with them.”
King announced his retirement to IAVM’s Membership and Board of
Directors on October 26. The Board will meet to address the succession
process and ensure a smooth leadership change.
“Over the last decade, King has been an incredible asset to IAVM,
leading us through both physical and economic threats. The Association
has benefited greatly from his leadership and his ability to build
rapport and create consensus among his peers. The senior leadership is
blessed to have the opportunity to work with King and set the stage for
the next decade and our new President and CEO,” said Chairman John
Siehl, CFE.
Prior to joining IAVM, King was in venue management for 32 years;
holding multiple positions including the Regional General Manager for
SMG of Alaska, managing venues in Anchorage and Fairbanks. He was the
Executive Director of the Boise State University Pavilion in Boise,
Idaho and prior to that served as the Executive Director of the Mabee
Center along with four other venues on the Oral Roberts University
campus in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
King participates in a number of organizations and associations
including the Boise Convention & Visitors Bureau and the Techniques for
Effective Alcohol Management Coalition (TEAM).
King has received many awards for his outstanding contributions to the
industry including IAVM’s prestigious Charles A. McElravy Award, the
highest honor in the industry; the Francis Deering Award and being named
Honorary Lifetime Member of the Venue Management Association and the
International Association of Venue Managers.
The International Association of Assembly Managers is the world's
largest professional association dedicated to issues relevant to the
management of public assembly venues. Members of the association manage
public assembly venues such as amphitheaters, arenas, auditoriums,
convention centers/exhibit halls, performing arts venues, stadiums and
university complexes; or provide products, services or attractions to
